Event: Young Author’s Conference

Where: F.R. Haythorne Junior High School, Sherwood Park, Alberta
When: February 25, 2017 (not yet updated for 2018)

Each year the annual Young Author’s Conference hosts over 370 selected grades 4 to 9 students from both Elk Island Public and Catholic Schools to spend the day with a variety of well-known children and young adult authors, illustrators, and graphic artists. The students learn tricks of the writing trade; the mentors nurture and guide the next generation of writers.

For many of us, writing begins at a young age. I started writing in the Summer between grades 6 and 7. I wrote my first novel in grade 9 during lunches and recesses. The audience is there, so this conference does offer value to budding prosaic and poetry writers. There are other in-school programs that also teach students to write and appreciate writing.
